Use this checklist when setting up a PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch for a child.

Account and Profile Setup

Create a child/family account (not an adult account)

Set the correct date of birth so age restrictions apply automatically

Choose a username that does not reveal your child's real name, age, or location

Set a strong password and do not share it with the child

Use a parent email address for account recovery

Parental Controls

Enable parental controls via the console settings or companion app

Set age rating restrictions (PEGI 3, 7, 12, 16, 18) appropriate to your child

Restrict or disable online multiplayer with strangers

Disable or limit voice chat and text messaging with other players

Restrict the ability to add friends — require parent approval
