Family Travel Safety Checklist
Use this checklist when preparing for any trip with children — whether a day out or an overseas holiday.
Before You Travel
Check all passports are in date (at least 6 months validity for overseas travel)
Carry a copy of your child's birth certificate if travelling with only one parent
Research the destination — check FCDO travel advice for overseas trips
Arrange travel insurance that covers children and medical emergencies
Pack a card with your contact details and hotel address for each child to carry
Take a clear, current photo of each child on the morning of travel
Note what each child is wearing that day (in case of separation)
Pack any medications with a written note of dosage instructions
Ensure each child's device has location sharing enabled
At the Airport, Station, or Port
Agree a meeting point in case you get separated
Teach children to approach a uniformed member of staff if lost
Keep children close in crowds — hold hands with younger children
Never leave luggage or children unattended
Ensure children know their full name and your phone number
At Your Destination
Check the hotel or accommodation for hazards (balconies, pools, unsecured windows)
Identify the nearest hospital or medical facility
Agree a meeting point at the hotel in case of fire or emergency
Locate fire exits and show them to the children
Note the local emergency number (112 in Europe, 911 in USA)
Apply sun protection and reapply regularly in hot climates
Supervise children at all times near water (pools, sea, lakes)
Day Trips and Outings
Agree a meeting point at every new venue before exploring
Dress younger children in bright, distinctive clothing
Consider a wristband with your phone number for toddlers
Set regular check-in times for older children exploring independently
Remind children: "If you get lost, stay where you are and we will come to you"
Online Safety While Travelling
Do not post real-time location photos on social media (post after you leave)
Avoid using public Wi-Fi for sensitive accounts
Ensure parental controls are still active on children's devices
Keep devices charged for emergency communication
