Roblox Expands Voice Chat to More Users

Roblox has lowered the age threshold for voice chat access, raising concerns about contact with strangers.

Published: 2026-02-05

What Changed

Roblox has expanded its voice chat feature to users aged 13 and over (previously 18+). While Roblox uses age verification for this feature, concerns have been raised about the reliability of the verification process and the increased risk of verbal contact between children and adult strangers. Voice chat is opt-in but is being promoted within the platform, and some popular games now encourage or require voice communication.

What to Review

  • Check whether your child has enabled voice chat in Roblox (Settings > Privacy > Enable Voice Chat).
  • Review which games your child plays and whether any of them use or encourage voice chat.
  • Discuss with your child what voice chat means — real-time spoken conversation with other players, who may be strangers and adults.

Parent Actions

  1. 1Go to Roblox Settings > Privacy and ensure Voice Chat is disabled unless you are comfortable with your child using it.
  2. 2If your child is using voice chat, agree on rules: never share personal information, never agree to move to another platform, and tell you if anyone makes them uncomfortable.
  3. 3Consider enabling Roblox Account Restrictions, which limit chat and restrict access to a curated list of age-appropriate games.
