Snapchat Updates Snap Map Privacy Defaults

Snapchat has changed how Snap Map location sharing works for younger users.

Published: 2026-02-20

What Changed

Snapchat has updated Snap Map so that accounts registered to users under 16 now default to 'Ghost Mode' (location hidden from all friends). Previously, new under-16 accounts defaulted to sharing their location with friends. Existing accounts are not automatically changed — parents need to update the setting manually. Snapchat has also added a new notification that reminds users monthly that their location is being shared.

What to Review

  • Check your child's Snap Map settings — if their account existed before this update, Ghost Mode may not be enabled.
  • Review who is on your child's friends list, as location is shared with all friends when Ghost Mode is off.
  • Discuss with your child why real-time location sharing with friends can be risky.

Parent Actions

  1. 1Open Snapchat > Tap the map icon > Tap the settings cog > Enable 'Ghost Mode' if it is not already on.
  2. 2Explain to your child that sharing their real-time location lets people know where they are at all times, including their home, school, and regular routes.
  3. 3Consider whether your child's friends list includes anyone they do not actually know in real life.
