MacBook Parental Controls & Safety Guide
Guide to setting up parental controls on MacBook using Screen Time and Family Sharing, including web filtering and app restrictions.
MacBooks running macOS are used by older children and teenagers for schoolwork, creative projects, and general browsing. Apple's Screen Time on macOS provides the same family of controls available on iPhone and iPad, including content restrictions, app limits, and web filtering. When combined with Family Sharing, parents can manage settings remotely.
Main risks
- • Unrestricted web browsing through Safari or third-party browsers
- • Downloading applications from the internet outside the Mac App Store
- • Accessing social media and messaging platforms without oversight
- • Extended screen time due to the dual use of the device for homework and entertainment
Initial setup steps
Add your child to Family Sharing
On your Mac or iPhone, go to System Settings > Family (or Settings > [Your Name] > Family Sharing) and add your child's Apple ID. This enables remote management of their Screen Time settings.
Set up your child's account on the MacBook
On the MacBook, go to System Settings > Users & Groups and create a Standard account (not Administrator) for your child using their Apple ID. Ensure your administrator account has a strong password.
Configure Screen Time restrictions
From your own Apple device, go to Screen Time settings for your child's account (via Family Sharing). Enable Content & Privacy Restrictions, set web content filtering, configure App Limits, and set Downtime schedules.
Lock Screen Time with a passcode
Ensure the Screen Time passcode is set and that your child does not know it. This prevents them from modifying or disabling restrictions on the MacBook.
Parental control settings
Screen Time on macOS
Location: System Settings > Screen Time (managed via Family Sharing on parent's device)
Recommended: Enabled with all relevant restrictions configured
Screen Time on macOS mirrors the controls available on iPhone and iPad, including Downtime, App Limits, Communication Limits, and Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Web Content Restrictions
Location: System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > Content Restrictions > Web Content
Recommended: 'Limit Adult Websites' for most children, 'Allowed Websites Only' for younger users
Filters web content in Safari. For comprehensive filtering, consider also restricting the installation of third-party browsers.
App Store and Software Restrictions
Location: System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Store, Allowed Apps
Recommended: Restrict app installation to Mac App Store only and enable Ask to Buy
Prevents installation of software downloaded from the internet, limiting your child to the curated Mac App Store where content ratings are enforced.
Age recommendations
A MacBook is generally more than a young child needs. If used, set 'Allowed Websites Only', restrict all app installation, and keep the device in a shared space. Consider an iPad instead for this age group.
Suitable for schoolwork with 'Limit Adult Websites' filtering enabled. Restrict software installation to the Mac App Store and maintain App Limits for entertainment apps. Review usage regularly.
Appropriate for school and personal use. Maintain web content filtering and Downtime during school and sleep hours. Gradually extend trust as responsible behaviour is demonstrated.
