Screen Time: Getting the Balance Right
Helping children understand why taking breaks from screens is good for them.
Screens are great, but so is everything else — take breaks and enjoy a mix of activities.
Screens can be brilliant — you can play games, learn new things, and talk to friends and family. But spending too long on screens without a break can make you feel tired, grumpy, or like you are missing out on other fun things. This page helps you think about getting the balance right.
Why Breaks Are Important
When you stare at a screen for a long time, your eyes get tired, your body gets stiff, and your brain can feel foggy. Taking breaks helps you feel better and enjoy your screen time more when you come back to it. Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It really helps your eyes.
Fun Things to Do Away from Screens
There are loads of brilliant things to do that do not involve a screen: playing outside, reading a book, drawing, building something, cooking with a grown-up, playing with a pet, or just chatting with your family. You might find that some of your best times happen when the screens are off.
Making a Plan Together
Talk to your family about a screen time plan that works for everyone. Maybe screens are fine after homework, or maybe you agree on screen-free mealtimes. Having a plan means there are no arguments — everyone knows the rules. And remember, grown-ups need to take breaks from screens too!
