How to Report on Steam
How to report harmful behaviour, content, or users on Steam and in Steam games to protect children who game online.
Report a Steam user from their profile
Navigate to the profile of the user you want to report by clicking their username. Scroll down their profile page and click 'More' followed by 'Report Violation'. Select the reason for your report from the dropdown menu — options include 'Harassment or threatening behaviour' and 'Inappropriate content'. Provide a clear description of the incident.
Report a chat message
In Steam chat, right-click on the specific message you want to report and select 'Report Message'. Choose the reason for the report. Steam's moderation team reviews reported chat messages, and repeated violations can result in chat bans.
Report in-game behaviour
Many games on Steam have their own in-game reporting tools. Access these through the game's pause menu or player list — look for a 'Report Player' option. Reporting in-game sends the report to the game's developer, not Steam directly. For serious concerns, also report via Steam as described in steps 1 and 2.
Report community content
If you encounter harmful content in the Steam Community (forums, reviews, artwork, screenshots), click the flag icon next to the content and select the relevant reason. Steam community moderators review flagged content and can remove it.
Review Family View settings
After reporting, review your child's Steam account settings. Enable Family View (Steam > Settings > Family) to restrict which games and community features your child can access. Set a PIN that your child does not know to prevent these settings being changed.
This is general educational guidance, not professional advice. If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 (UK) or 911 (US).
