Screen Time and Looking After Yourself
An assembly exploring the relationship between screen time and wellbeing, encouraging children to develop healthy digital habits.
Overview
This assembly helps children and young people think about how screen time affects their mood, sleep, and relationships. It is not about banning screens but about developing awareness and balance. Practical tips are presented in a way that empowers rather than lectures.
Talking Points
Screens are a useful part of life, but like anything, too much of one thing can crowd out other important things — sleep, exercise, time with friends and family.
Have you ever noticed that you feel different after an hour of scrolling compared to an hour of playing outside? That is your body telling you something.
Blue light from screens can make it harder to fall asleep. Try to have a screen-free hour before bed — your brain will thank you.
If you find it hard to stop using a device, that is not a weakness — apps are literally designed to keep you coming back. Recognising it is the first step.
Balance is the key. Ask yourself: am I using screens because I want to, or because I cannot think of anything else to do?
Key Message
Screens are tools, not bosses. You are in charge of how much time you spend on them and what you use them for.
Follow-Up Activity
Challenge each class to try a 'screen-free evening' and report back on what they did instead. Create a display of alternative activities.
