Staying Safe with Strangers Online

An assembly helping children understand that people online may not be who they claim to be, and how to stay safe.

15 minutesAges: 7-11

Overview

This assembly helps children understand that not everyone online is who they say they are. Using age-appropriate examples, it explains why personal information should be kept private and what to do if a stranger tries to contact them. The tone is protective rather than frightening.

Talking Points

1

In real life, you would not give your address to a stranger in the street. The same rule applies online.

2

Some people online pretend to be someone they are not — they might use a fake name, a fake photo, or pretend to be the same age as you.

3

A real friend would never ask you to keep your friendship a secret from your parents or teachers.

4

If someone online asks you personal questions, wants to meet you, or makes you feel uncomfortable, tell a trusted adult straight away.

5

You will never get into trouble for telling a grown-up about something that worried you online.

Key Message

Keep personal information private, and always tell a trusted adult if a stranger online makes you feel uncomfortable.

Follow-Up Activity

In class, children create 'Stranger Danger Online' bookmarks listing three rules for staying safe and the names of their trusted adults.
