Discord Adds New Safety Tools for Younger Users

Discord has expanded its parental supervision and safety features, including new controls for users under 18.

What Changed

Discord has introduced a Family Centre feature that allows parents to link their account to their teen's account (with the teen's consent) and view activity summaries — including which servers their teen has joined and who they have been messaging, without showing message content. Discord has also added an improved safe messaging filter and updated default settings for new under-18 accounts to restrict direct messages from people who share no mutual servers.

What to Review

  • Set up Discord Family Centre if your teen uses the platform — go to discord.com/family-centre.
  • Check which servers your teen has joined — servers vary enormously in moderation quality and content.
  • Review your teen's direct message settings to ensure messages from strangers are restricted.

Parent Actions

  1. 1Set up Family Centre by visiting discord.com/family-centre and following the linking process with your teen.
  2. 2Review the server list with your teen and discuss any servers that appear concerning.
  3. 3Check Settings > Privacy & Safety > Safe Direct Messaging is set to filter explicit content.
