Overview

Twitch is the world's largest live-streaming platform, primarily focused on gaming but also covering music, art, cooking, and general chat. Viewers watch streamers in real time and interact through live text chat. The live nature of the platform means content is unfiltered and unpredictable, and chat rooms can move extremely quickly.

How children use it

Children watch their favourite gamers and content creators streaming live, often for extended periods. They interact through fast-moving live chat, follow channels, and may aspire to become streamers themselves. Some children use Bits or subscriptions to support streamers, which involves real money.

Main risks

Recommended privacy settings

Block Whispers from Strangers

Location: Settings → Security and Privacy → Privacy → Block Whispers from Strangers

Set to: On

Prevents unknown users from sending private 'whisper' messages to your child during live streams.

Content Filtering

Location: Settings → Content Preferences → Mature Content

Set to: Disable (opt out of mature content streams)

Prevents your child from viewing streams marked as containing mature content. Note that not all streamers correctly label their content.

Two-Factor Authentication

Protects the account from being compromised, which is particularly important if your child has followers or saved payment information.
