How to Leave a Group Chat or Game Safely
Helping children understand that it is okay to leave online conversations or games that make them uncomfortable.
You are always allowed to leave — putting yourself first is a strong and smart thing to do.
Group chats and online games can be fun, but sometimes they stop being fun. Maybe people are being mean, saying things that make you uncomfortable, or the game does not feel safe anymore. You are always allowed to leave — and this page shows you how.
It Is Always Okay to Leave
You never have to stay in a group chat or game that makes you feel bad. Even if your friends are in it, even if people might ask why you left — you are allowed to go. Your feelings come first. Leaving does not make you a bad friend or a quitter. It makes you smart for looking after yourself.
How to Leave
In most group chats, you can tap and hold the chat name and choose 'Leave Group' or 'Exit.' In games, you can usually quit to the main menu or close the app. If someone is being mean in a game, you can also mute or block them. If you are not sure how to leave, ask a grown-up to help you find the right button.
What to Do Afterwards
If the chat or game made you feel upset, talk to a grown-up about it. They can help you decide whether to go back or not. If people from the group message you to ask why you left, you can say 'I did not want to be in there anymore' — you do not owe anyone a big explanation. And if anyone tries to pressure you to come back, that is another good reason to stay away.
If you ever need someone to talk to, you can call Childline for free on 0800 1111.
