What to Do If Someone Online Makes You Feel Weird
A gentle guide for children about what to do when someone on the internet makes them feel uncomfortable or uneasy.
Your feelings matter — if something feels wrong, it is always okay to tell a grown-up.
Sometimes when you are playing games or chatting online, someone might say or do something that makes your tummy feel funny — like something is not quite right. That feeling is your body telling you something important. You have not done anything wrong, and there are grown-ups who can help.
Trust That Funny Feeling
If someone online says something that makes you feel weird, scared or uncomfortable, that feeling matters. It is like an alarm bell inside you — your body's way of saying 'something is not right here.' You do not have to keep talking to that person. You can close the app or walk away from the screen. That is always okay to do.
Tell a Grown-Up You Trust
Find a grown-up you trust — like a parent, carer, teacher or another family member — and tell them what happened. You will not get into trouble. Grown-ups want to help keep you safe, and they need to know when something does not feel right. If the first person you tell does not help, tell someone else. Keep telling until someone listens.
You Have Not Done Anything Wrong
Sometimes children worry that they will get into trouble if they tell someone. That is not true. If someone online made you feel uncomfortable, that is not your fault. It does not matter what you said or did before — you deserve to feel safe. Telling a grown-up is the brave and right thing to do.
