Why Telling a Trusted Adult Always Helps

Reassuring children that speaking to a trusted adult about online worries is always the right thing to do.

Telling a trusted adult is always the right thing to do — and it is never too late to speak up.

If something happens online that makes you feel worried, scared, or confused, the best thing you can do is tell a grown-up you trust. Some children worry they will get in trouble or that the grown-up will not understand. This page explains why telling someone always helps — and it is never too late to speak up.

You Will Not Get Into Trouble

Lots of children keep quiet because they worry about getting into trouble. But grown-ups know that things can go wrong online even when you have done nothing wrong. The grown-ups in your life want to help you, and they will be glad you told them. You are not being a tell-tale — you are being brave and smart.

Pick Someone You Trust

A trusted adult is someone who makes you feel safe and who listens to you. This could be a mum, dad, grandparent, auntie, uncle, teacher, school nurse, or even a friend's parent. You can also call Childline on 0800 1111 — it is free, private, and you do not even have to give your name.

What If the First Person Does Not Help?

Sometimes the first person you tell might be busy, might not understand, or might not know what to do. That does not mean your problem does not matter. Tell someone else. Keep telling until someone listens and helps. There is always someone who will take you seriously.

If you ever need someone to talk to, you can call Childline for free on 0800 1111.
