Overview
WhatsApp is the most widely used messaging app in the UK, offering text, voice, and video communication with end-to-end encryption. It also supports group chats, status updates, and file sharing. Whilst primarily used for practical family and friend communication, the lack of parental controls and content moderation means children need guidance.
How children use it
Children use WhatsApp mainly for messaging friends and family, sharing photos and videos, and participating in group chats for school, sports clubs, and social groups. Group chats can become very active and sometimes involve bullying or the sharing of inappropriate content passed around peer groups.
Main risks
Recommended privacy settings
Profile Photo Visibility
Location: Settings → Privacy → Profile Photo
Set to: My Contacts
Limits who can see your child's profile photo. Set to My Contacts to prevent strangers from viewing it.
Last Seen and Online
Location: Settings → Privacy → Last Seen and Online
Set to: My Contacts
Controls who can see when your child was last active. Reduces pressure to respond immediately and limits information available to strangers.
Group Invitations
Location: Settings → Privacy → Groups
Set to: My Contacts
Prevents unknown numbers from adding your child to group chats without their consent.
Disappearing Messages
Location: Settings → Privacy → Default Message Timer
Set to: Off (so conversations can be reviewed if needed)
Disappearing messages can prevent parents from reviewing conversations if a concern arises. Keeping this off is generally advisable.
